Travel Tip #64: Bring a flashlight

Oh gee. They’re turning off all the lights in Departures.
Perhaps one of the more annoying thing about having all my baggage on me, alone, with nothing to do with them, is that I can’t really go to the bathroom without risking having all my stuff stolen from me.
This sucks.

Separation; Travel Anxiety

So far, this leg of my journey has been pretty godawful. It’s been a graceful snowball of small things (and one gigantic thing) into a literal mess that now leaves me sitting in the departures terminal (not behind security) at Incheon International at 8:37 PM until 6 AM tomorrow morning, when they’ll let me check [...]

Promised musing: The Zoo

Posted by Jayml on June 28, 2009 at 5:07 pm | Filled Under: Alaska, Travelogue| 2 comments

As of the clock now, I’ll be beginning my journey to China in about… 15 hours or so. That is, of course, if you don’t count from when I left Connecticut as the “beginning.” Either way, my flight leaves around 7:30 AM tomorrow.
To distract me the act of pulling myself away from Kelly for the [...]

Returned

5.x miles in, an overnight, then 5.x miles out – in all, 11 – 12 miles hiked (with 50 lbs of crap on our backs).
Then a bonfire cookout on a rocky riverbed.
I promise, pictures soon… errands to run tomorrow, packing; flight Monday morning.

Tying up lose ends; frayed

Before I get around to writing about the Anchorage Zoo, I need to share with you all the events of the last five hours.
Shortly after breakfast, around 11 or so, I started the process that would ultimately consolidate the bulk of my federal loans into a single, comprehensive payment under the Department of Education – [...]

Travel Tip #6: Go to Denali.

RV from the Back

The pictures that follow barely give due justice to the jaw-dropping beauty of Denali, or of outside-of-Anchorage Alaska in general. These little pictures can do little to convey the perception-shattering sense of scale of these real mountains – mountains that make Alaskans call Colorado “flat” and instinctively refer to the New England Appalacians as “speedbumps.”
It [...]

Crisis Averted

Posted by Jayml on June 19, 2009 at 9:26 am | Filled Under: Alaska, Travelogue| No comments

We’re a bit busy packing and preparing for our RV trip up to Denali, so I can’t really make too much of a post (though I do have some pictures from my trip to the Zoo yesterday – I’ve got connections to let me see the wolves up close). However, I did more or less [...]

Travel Tip # 1119: Steller Jays are bitches

Bitches.

I’m sitting here quietly, with Will taking a nap and everyone else out, trying to get my Wacom groove back when the incessant noise of screaming birds invades my mental space. They must have been going on for a while, but these birds didn’t really register on my conscious until I saw one of them [...]

Why is everything so goddamn hard?

My Own Personal Budget Crisis
Ugh – my immunizations are going to run me, at the very least, $400 bucks. Insurance might cover it, if I’m lucky, but it’s too complicated to tell at this point. Alaska is simultaneously in-network and out-of-network, somehow, like they’re integrated with Washington State or somesuch. Basically, neither Connecticut nor Alaska [...]
